The Michigan Municipal League this month presented a 2024 “Legislator of the Year” award to state Rep. Mike Harris.

The league, which advocates for city, village, and urban township governments about state and federal policy issues, gave Harris the award in recognition of his efforts to support Michigan communities — especially his work last year to pass a plan to reimburse local jurisdictions for ambulance services provided to Medicaid recipients.

Harris, who served 26 years in local law enforcement, praised the important role of decisions made and public services provided at the local government level.

“Taxpayers rely on our local governments for many of the most essential public services — from running our elections and fixing city streets to protecting our neighborhoods and saving lives in emergencies,” said Harris, R-Waterford. “That’s an important feature of our system of self-government, because the people have the most influence in decisions at the local level. As a state representative, I support the unique and important role our local communities play, ensuring they have the resources and flexibility they need to deliver value to Michigan residents. It’s an honor to receive this recognition from the Michigan Municipal League.”

Along with Harris, MML also named Rep. Mike McFall, D-Hazel Park, a Legislator of the Year. McFall sponsored the ambulance reimbursement legislation, which became law with bipartisan support.
